Where to Stay in Pretoria
Your guide to the best areas and accommodation types
Pretoria arranges itself around a government core near Arcadia and the Union Buildings, a university-anchored entertainment belt in Hatfield, and an upscale suburban sweep through Brooklyn toward Menlyn's commercial hub. Centurion anchors the southern edge with Gautrain access direct to O.R. Tambo airport. Mid-range rooms cluster in Hatfield and Arcadia.
Brooklyn and Menlyn carry a premium. Budget accommodation concentrates in Hatfield and around Church Square in the CBD.

The embassy and government belt east of the centre, where wide avenues planted with jacaranda trees glow purple in October and the sweet scent of blossom drifts through open car windows. Church Street carries the low hum of official traffic past colonial-era facades and the gates of foreign missions. The Union Buildings sit on a ridge above it all, looking down over terraced rose gardens to the city below.
- ✓ Walking distance to Union Buildings, National Zoological Gardens, and Pretoria Art Museum
- ✓ Dense hotel infrastructure with conference and banquet facilities
- ✓ Well-lit, wide streets with consistent security presence
- ✓ Central position for reaching any suburb by car or taxi

Shaded by old liquidambar and oak trees, Brooklyn runs south through avenues lined with independent coffee shops, florists, and fine-dining restaurants that keep outdoor heaters glowing on cool winter evenings. The Brooklyn Mall anchors the neighbourhood without dominating it. Quieter and distinctly more residential than anything closer to the centre, it rewards those who want space and good food over sights and street energy.
- ✓ Pretoria's strongest independent restaurant cluster within walking distance
- ✓ Quieter and greener than the centre with wide, tree-shaded streets
- ✓ Brooklyn Mall for groceries, pharmacy, and daily needs
- ✓ Strong boutique guesthouse scene with pool gardens

- ✗ Fewer cultural sights within walking distance than Arcadia or the CBD

Pretoria's fastest-growing commercial node, anchored by Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, whose glass atrium echoes with the hum of escalators and the warm smell of cinnamon from the food court. Glass towers and conference hotels rise along Atterbury Road. Functional rather than atmospheric. But the hotel stock is new, the streets are clean, and the Atterbury Theatre gives the area genuine cultural weight beyond the mall.
- ✓ New, well-maintained hotels with strong conference and meeting facilities
- ✓ Walking access to Menlyn Park restaurants, cinema, and supermarkets
- ✓ Atterbury Theatre for theatre, concerts, and comedy shows year-round
- ✓ Good road connections toward the N1 and the eastern suburbs
- ✗ No urban character. The area reads as a commercial interchange rather than a neighbourhood
- ✗ Atterbury Road traffic sits heavily during morning and evening peaks

Straddling the Pretoria and Johannesburg boundary, Centurion offers the metro's fastest Gautrain link to O.R. Tambo airport and a calmer pace than either city flanking it. The reed-fringed Centurion Lake trail feels cool in the mornings, with herons standing motionless in the shallows and Egyptian geese calling across the water. Business parks keep midweek occupancy high and weekend rates pleasingly low.
- ✓ Fastest and most direct Gautrain route to O.R. Tambo airport
- ✓ Weekend rates fall below the Pretoria centre average at most properties
- ✓ Centurion Lake for morning walks with abundant birdlife
- ✓ Irene Village Market on weekend mornings for local produce and crafts
- ✗ Lacks any historic or neighbourhood identity of its own
- ✗ Driving into central Pretoria takes a solid half-hour against peak traffic

Church Square is the historic core. Palace of Justice and old Raadsaal stare at each other across stone that carries the scent of roasted maize from braziers. Pavement vendors keep the coals glowing. Minibus taxis rattle the surrounding streets. Hawkers sell airtime and fried dough beside the bus ranks. Budget accommodation clusters here, close to public transport. Cultural institutions are walkable. The area pulses all day.
- ✓ Walking distance to Church Square, the State Theatre, and Pretoria Art Museum
- ✓ Most affordable hotel options in the city
- ✓ Frequent bus and taxi connections to every suburb
- ✓ Authentic working-city atmosphere and the best street food in Pretoria
- ✗ Requires more street awareness after dark than Hatfield or Brooklyn
- ✗ Several blocks around the taxi ranks feel noticeably run-down

Accommodation Types
From budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels, here's what's available.
South African chains like Protea and City Lodge dominate Arcadia, Hatfield, and Menlyn. Pools, restaurants, consistent standards throughout. You know what you are getting.
Best for: Business travelers, conference guests, first-time visitors. People who want reliability and daily housekeeping. Simple as that.
Brooklyn, Waterkloof, and the Hatfield fringes hold the city's best intimate guesthouses. Restored houses, pool gardens, personal service. Each place feels different.
Best for: Couples, returning visitors, travelers who want local character. Skip chain-hotel uniformity. Talk to the owner over coffee.

Best for: Extended-stay business travelers, families, anyone who wants a kitchen. Skip daily restaurant costs. Cook your own breakfast.
Hatfield holds the city's main hostel cluster. Braai areas, communal kitchens, garden spaces. Solo travelers gather here.

Booking Tips
Insider advice to help you find the best accommodation.
The Union Buildings jacaranda bloom is a genuine domestic draw. Arcadia and Hatfield hotels fill four to six weeks before mid-October. Menlyn and Centurion stay available much closer to the bloom itself. Practical alternatives when central Pretoria is sold out.
Business park demand drives Monday-to-Thursday occupancy in Centurion. The same room at Centurion Lake Hotel or Leriba often costs noticeably less on Friday and Saturday nights. Attractive base for leisure travelers who also need easy airport access.
The June to July winter break and the December to January summer closure spike demand across all price tiers. Pretoria fills faster than Johannesburg during these windows. Families prefer its calmer pace and residential feel.
Pretoria's boutique guesthouse scene in Brooklyn and Waterkloof is only partially indexed on major booking platforms. Phoning or emailing a property directly often surfaces availability that does not appear on any listing site. Rates sometimes improve for direct bookings at smaller properties.
When to Book
Timing matters for both price and availability.
Reserve four to six weeks ahead for October and the June to July school holidays. Arcadia and Hatfield properties go first. Best rooms disappear quickly.
August, September, and November offer warm and clear Highveld days. Rates sit meaningfully lower than the October peak. Far fewer crowds.
January through May, outside Easter weekend, is the easiest period for availability. Walk-in rates at mid-range hotels match online prices. Upgrades are common.
Two weeks covers most situations outside the peak windows. October in Arcadia and Hatfield requires six weeks minimum. Plan accordingly.
