Helpful Tips
Grab the Gautrain app. Buy tickets there. Check live train times between Hatfield and Park stations. It saves queuing.
Metered taxis wait outside Hatfield Gautrain station. Uber uses the same ranks. Both run day and night.
Pick up a Gautrain Gold Card. Top it up at any station. Swipe for smooth train-to-bus transfers.
Peak hours? Board the Gautrain bus at Hatfield station. It drops you at University of Pretoria main campus.
Common Scams to Avoid
Unlicensed drivers at OR Tambo arrivals: Men posing as official airport taxis solicit rides inside the terminal, then charge inflated 'airport fees' on arrival. Only use the official metered taxi rank outside or pre-book through the airport's approved services.
Hotel shuttle impersonators: Individuals claiming to be from your Pretoria hotel approach in the pickup area, then demand cash payment mid-journey claiming 'booking system error'. Verify the driver's name and vehicle details with your hotel before boarding any shuttle.
Currency exchange overcharging: Exchange kiosks near OR Tambo's international arrivals advertise 'no commission' but use poor exchange rates specifically targeting arriving passengers unfamiliar with South African rand values. Compare rates online beforehand or use ATMs inside the secure area for better rates.
